roof gardens technical information & reports

In certain areas of the UK there are now local policies in place to increase the number of Green Roof installations and take advantage of the unique advantages offered with this type of system. These benefits include but are not limited to :-Increased amenity space, in urban areas there is often a shortage of  space for residents.

Green Roofs actually provide a level of protection to the roof membrane and can significantly extend the life of the roof.

The thermal performance of the building is improved by cooling in summer months and increasing insulation during the winter.

Another benefit is that the various layers and components used in the buildup of the roof act as an acoustic barrier to stop or reflect noise.

Green roofs also act as important habitat for bio diverse insect life and more work has gone into selecting the correct type of planting to encourage habitat.

The combination of soil, plants and drainage layers can also have a positive effect to rainwater run-off from a building which is particularly important in terms of reducing floods which are increasing as a result of global warming.

There are various types of Green Roof system available and to an extent the decision on which type is determined by a number of factors.

Building Constraints
Structural Limitations
Site conditions for vegetation
Weather Factors
